Dr Tory, for Albinism

PROJECT VALUE: P 20,000.00 BWP / $ 2,000.00 USD

Albinism is a rare genetic condition with the highest prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa, where rates as high as 1/1000 births have been reported. During Dr Tory’s clinical work in dermatology, she experienced first-hand that albino patients are an incredibly vulnerable and underserved population in Botswana.

The total number of people living with albinism in Botswana is unknown, but currently over 150 patients with albinism are cared for in Dr Tory’s dermatology clinic. Most have no income due to visual disability or discrimination which hinders their educational development and ability to find employment. Few understand their condition due to lack of basic education and consequent poor health literacy.

Lady Khama Charitable Trust has found looking after people with albinism as a vital need, hence collaborated with Dr Tory to make a difference.
